Rend
Rend is a Rock / Pop Band from Canada based in Edmonton. Band members include: Carol-Lynne Quinn (Vocals), Nate Glubish (Keys), Steve Roe (Guitar), and Jeff Quinn (Bass). Their music sounds a lot like Foo Fighters, Paramore, Coldplay and Metric. They were recently nominated for “Edmonton’s Music Awards” for “Female Artist of the Year.” They have shared the stage with numerous artists/bands to include: Faber Drive, Harlequin, The Classic Crime, Fighting For Ithaca, Mad June along with many others. They released their debut album titled “No Lines” in February 2012 which includes some awesome tracks (that I recommend you listen to) like Battlecry, Hide, Monster, Shadow and my favorite- No Lines. I enjoyed listening to their music and lyrics as the songs took me down a path, not just musically but almost a personal journey of different emotions and in the end I know that I'm battling my inner“Monster” creating “No Lines.”
THE INTERVIEW
Brenda/HRM: Please introduce yourself and your band members and tell me how you chose the name REND?
Carol-Lynne Quinn - Vocals
Jeff Quinn - Bass
Steve Roe - Guitar
Nate Glubish - Keys
Jordan Dempster - Drums
Carol-Lynne Quinn: Rend means to tear apart so you're never the same again. We want our music to be influential, inspiring and not easily passed over. We want people to watch us live and feel/experience something that does impact them. Also Rend switched around spells Nerd. (smiles)
Brenda/HRM: What were other names for the band that just didn’t quite make it?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: It was always Rend - I (CL) had the name picked out quite a while before this project formed!
Brenda/HRM: If you were to have named your band after a fruit, what would that fruit have been and why?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: (laughs) After a fruit…hey, Dragonfruit, that sounds epic. And it's not something normal. Who wants to be a melon?
Brenda/HRM: Your songs are very striking. I love the lyrics in "No Lines" what inspired this song?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: Thank you. (Smiles) I am passionate about writing songs with depth and lyrics that say something. This song is inspired by unconditional love. I think most of us have been in relationships where there are "lines" drawn and once they are crossed it’s hard to get back what you have. It's a song going through the journey of what once was easy but is now an uphill battle (at least for one). It's a cry for no matter how hard this season (easy or hard) to be loved fiercely, No lines - nothing breaking that bond. I think most of us desire that type of forgiving, unconditional, understanding relationship. Rock and roll!
Brenda/HRM: Many artists write from personal experience, which song would you say is closest to your heart? And why?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: Ah! I don't write a song unless it is close to my heart.
Our albums and my lyrics are like reading my therapists notes or my journal. The writing process is often a time for musical and emotional release. Different experiences and emotions every time. What can I say, I want to be well rounded, (Smiles) I would say writing “Shadow” was a particularly vulnerable yet awesome experience.
Brenda/HRM: Do you have any upcoming releases / a new album / shows that we should know about?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: Yes! We are always playing shows around our home province (Alberta) and then we are planning another Canadian tour in the Fall! Triple YES! We are recording our second record right now and are really stoked to release it in the Fall!
Brenda/HRM: If the song "Monster" were a flavor of ice cream, which flavor would best represent the song?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: These questions are awesome! Well it's kind of a Jekyll and Hyde song. So maybe peanut butter chocolate. 2 flavors playing tug of war. Or maybe 2 flavors that are opposite like Bubblegum Mint Chocolate. Eww!
Brenda/HRM: (laughs) If you could perform with any band of your choice, who would that be and why?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: I think we all would disagree on this one (laughs).
For the others I’m guessing:
Jeff - RHCP or Marcus Miller
Nate - U2
Steve - Led Zeppelin
Jordan – ahh, he's the "new guy"
Me ... Definitely MUSE - to share the stage with Matthew Bellamy would blow my mind. Although there are so many amazing choices that I would be honored to rock with.
Brenda/HRM: What is something crazy, like a must-do ritual before you perform at each show?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: Fist bump or some sort of pow wow with the guys. We're a team and I usually run around the stage fist bumping the guys right before we go on. Nate needs Coke, not Pepsi. Give that guy a trunk full of Coca Cola and he's ready to go!
Brenda/HRM: Who are some of your inspirations?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: Muse, Led Zeppelin, Metric, City and Colour, Mother Mother, Alanis Morissette, Foo Fighters, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Regina Spektor, Jesse J (killer vocals), Death Cab for Cutie, U2, RHCP, OLP, Radiohead, Mute Math, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, we could keep going.
Brenda/HRM: If you had to create a float for a Halloween parade, and each band member had to dress up, what would they be?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: Zombies!!! Or Pirate, Beethoven, Slash, Geddy Lee and a Hot Dog.
Brenda/HRM: Have you ever fallen on stage and made it look like a fashioning roll?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: (laughs) Nope but Steve and I always seem to collide. Guitar meets face..usually guitar wins. (laughs)
Brenda/HRM: What's your favorite food? Do you like barbecue sauce? How about ketchup?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: What? You're creeping me out. Have you stalked us before? All I eat is Ketchup. Ok on things. But I eat it with my bacon and eggs and apparently that's weird.
Fav food... I think we all like different food but we're all pretty good at trying to eat healthy on tour. Fast food 10 days in a row is not a good plan.
Brenda/HRM: That last question was a little crazy, but if you were a hotdog, what would you have on you?
Ok I'm picking these…
Jeff - Ketchup and Mustard
Nate - 2/8ths mustard, 3/8ths ketchup, and 3/8ths coca cola
Steve - chocolate ketchup
Jordan - Ketchup
For me, Ketchup, BBQ suace and Old Dutch Crinkly Chips
That was weird.
Brenda/HRM: We like to let people know the personalities and sense of humor and so far, you rock majorly! I know when you're on tour crazy things happen, what's the craziest thing that has happened while you guys were on the road?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: Well we've done a tour out East were we slept in Walmart Parking lots ... No heat in Canada. We also toured in a truck. Yup, all 5 of us and I had no seatbelt the whole time. We once played a show and the venue owners put us up in this RV in an orchard. That was sweet!
Brenda/HRM: Do you ever wake up from a deep sleep with the best song ever, sit down to write it and you've forgotten it? Do you go back to sleep hoping it'll come back to you?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: No but I do wake up with songs I'm writing going over and over in my head. Usually my newest one doesn't stop going round and round for days! Once I had this chorus stuck in my head for weeks. I woke up hearing it every morning - so I finally wrote it. It may be on the new record.
Brenda/HRM: Would you say you sleep more comfortably on your stomach or your back?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: For me, definitely on my stomach and when I'm not by some of the guys who snore. (laughs)
Brenda/HRM: Where can people go to get more info about you? Do you have a fan club?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: We are pretty active on our facebook page. Probably b/c it's so simple to talk to Rends that way! www.facebook.com/rendmusic
We also have a website - www.rend-music.com and twitter.com/rendmusic and all the other links that comes with this band thing, youtube.com/rendmusic etc.
Brenda/HRM: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: We are growing, learning and writing some pretty wicked new tunes. I would say try to make it out to a live show. That's a whole different experience than our first record. We have played 75 shows in this past year and are honing who we are. We are pretty proud of our live musical experience and I would always suggest people to go out to a show of ours. That's definitely one of our biggest strengths.
Our new single will be hitting radio in September - please look for us! We are simply 5 passionate people passionate about creating new, inspiring, and good music.
Our songs “Hide” and “Battlecry” have already been on some radio stations across Canada and you can always request them! (smiles)
Brenda/HRM: What did you think of this interview?
Carol-Lynne Quinn: I thought it was thorough. (laughs) But seriously if you were a piece of pie what pie would you be?
Brenda/HRM: (laughs) Precious pie! I'd like to thank you for taking the time to do this interview. Keep up with the good work and I look forward to hearing new things from you guys! Best of luck!
Carol-Lynne Quinn: Thank you so much! (smiles)
